Contemporary dance for all children and young people

Come and try a FREE taster class with TIN Arts! Suitable for all with no previous experience necessary, we offer high-quality creative dance classes with a focus on fun!

Dance classes at TIN Arts are specifically designed so that children and young people of all abilities can take part in our activities.  We have classes ranging from complete beginners to young people preparing for professional training and auditions. Our classes are delivered by TIN Arts’ own highly experienced team with an emphasis on building confident self-aware young people.

Classes for children aged 2 to 11 (ages are given as a guideline)

Tiny TINs

Saturdays 9.30 to 10.15 – Framwellgate Moor Community Centre (TIN Arts dance studio) 

Accompanied by their grown-up helper, Tiny TINs take their first dance steps. Using music and yoga-based techniques, the children develop their motor skills and learn about the world around them.  Tiny TINs is suitable for pre-school children aged 2+.

Scramble

Saturdays 10.30 to 11.30 – Framwellgate Moor Community Centre (TIN Arts dance studio)

Scramble is for children aged 4 to 6.  Scramble dancers are encouraged to bring a grown-up helper to class.  They explore dance through movement, play and music whilst developing fitness, creativity and social skills, and have the opportunity to take part in their first performances as part of our annual SLIDE! event. Classes are suitable for children of all abilities, with or without a grown-up helper.

Zigzag

Fridays 4.30 to 5.30 – Framwellgate Moor Community Centre (adult hall)

Zigzag is for children aged 7 to 9 who are confident to dance without a grown-up helper.  Zigzag children learn contemporary dance technique through play, music and movement.  They are supported by our experienced dance practitioners to develop their creativity and learn to share their ideas to create a dance performance piece.

Mishmash

Currently not scheduled

Mishmash is for children aged 9 to 11.  Children build on technique, choreographic and creative skills they learnt at Scramble and Zigzag.

Classes for young people aged 11 to 19 (or 25 for young people with a disability)

Twister

Fridays 5.30 to 6.30 – Framwellgate Moor Community Centre (adult hall)

At Twister, young people start to develop a technical understanding of contemporary dance.  They combine this understanding and their own creativity to explore choreography and create performance work. This is an entry level class suitable for all.

Frantic

Fridays 5.00 to 6.30 Framwellgate Moor Community Centre (TIN Arts dance studio)

In Frantic a range of dance techniques are explored and technical skills are developed to a high standard. Young people work as a group to choreograph dance performance work. This class is suitable for dancers with previous experience.

D+

Fridays 7.30 – 9.30 Framwellgate Moor Community Centre (TIN Arts dance studio)

D+ includes fast-paced technique classes and develops dancers’ technical understanding of contemporary dance.  Dancers explore creative methods, choreographic tools and a range of contemporary dance techniques.  They continue to work on technical understanding and application.   Young people will have the opportunity to independently choreograph their own work and to complete Silver Arts Award.  This class is suitable for young people preparing for vocational courses and dance auditions.

Pizazz

Wednesdays 5.00 to 6.00 (TIN Arts dance studio)

This new, exciting and energetic class offers those interested in musical theatre the opportunity to explore this stylish discipline.  The group will create a performance piece and will have the opportunity to complete Arts Award Explore and Discover.

In Toto

Fridays 6.30 – 7.30 Framwellgate Moor Community Centre (TIN Arts dance studio and adult hall)

This class is for all young dancers aged 11 or over.  The class brings together young people from Frantic, Twister, D+ and Pizazz to dance and perform together.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

What is contemporary dance?

Contemporary dance technique is based on yoga and classical ballet whilst taking inspiration from many other dance forms so is easily modified to suit different styles and abilities of dancers. Young people move through a series of groups as they develop and grow as dancers.

What should I wear to class?

Young people should wear clothes they can move around in comfortably such as a t-shirt and joggers. Most young people dance with bare feet.

Do I need to bring anything?

Young people just need to bring a bottle of water.

How much do classes cost?

Classes are priced according to their length:
